If the Costumer Fits...

Constance Korosec, Ph.D., Fashion Design and Merchandising Chair and Professor
  • Ph.D., Case Western Reserve University
  • M.A., Kent State University
  • B.S., Kent State University

Dr. Korosec is, without a doubt, a fashion expert. Her resume includes 250 successfully costumed plays, and she's written several noted books on fashion design. When Ursuline was looking for a professor that could combine real-world experience with excellent academic credentials, they quickly discovered a "perfect fit," and her 20-year career here proves it.

Fashion classrooms can be crowded with mannequins, fabric samples, and student artwork, as well as the diverse collection of students themselves who explore the worlds of costuming and haut couture. "We attract the traditional age student, as well as the returning-to-the-workforce adult student," Dr. Korosec explains. Their different life experiences and viewpoints come together in interesting patterns, creating a colorful... well, "fabric" of learning.

Outside the classroom, Korosec helps produce the annual student fashion show, and accompanies students to New York City, Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, Las Vegas, and Toronto, where they meet face-to-face with fashion experts and potential employers. Recently, a local company called Playn'Store requested that Ursuline students design career and storybook costumes for a new store location. (They were so impressed with the students' work that they want to repeat the assignment in the future!) All of those networking and learning opportunities are essential in such a challenging field, and Dr. Korosec vigorously promotes them.

In her opinion, Ursuline students are unique because they know the value of working together. She quotes B.J. Marshall: "'Working together, ordinary people can perform extraordinary feats. They can push things that come into their hands a little higher up, a little farther on towards the heights of excellence.' I believe that professors and students at Ursuline can do just that."

The Dean of the School of Professional Studies noted recently, "Dr. Korosec loves her job and it shows. Her tireless commitment to the Fashion program and her students is exemplary."
